RULES AND PROCEDURES

I. ATTENDANCE

A. Student Obligations
Students must be present at all scheduled 1)lessons, 2) music skills classes, 3) orchestra rehearsals/ensemble classes, and 4) technique and repertoire classes.  In addition, practice at home during the week is a major requirement to participate in the String Project.  Suggested practice time is as follows:  1) 30 minutes a day for students with 30 minute private lessons, 2) 45 minutes a day for students with 45 minute private lessons, and 3) 60 minutes a day for students with 60 minute private lessons.  Student are required to turn in weekly practice reports to their private teacher.

B. Absences
If it is necessary for a student to miss a class or lesson, the parent should submit notice in writing before the scheduled time.  The reason for the absence should be given.  The teacher is not expected to make up lessons missed by the student.  If it is necessary for the teacher to cancel a lesson, he/she is required to notify the parent in advance and to make up the lesson, preferably in advance.

C. Valid Excuses
The only valid excuses for absences are 1) illness, 2) death in the immediate family, 3) a public school orchestra performance, 4) religious holidays, and 5) natural disaster.  Absences due to these causes will be excused unless, in the opinion of the teacher, they have become frequent as to impair the student or class.  In addition, each student is allowed one (1) excused absence per semester for a school music activity that is non-string related.

D. Absence Limit
More than two unexcused absences per semester in any one of the four areas mentioned in section A will result in automatic probation (see section III) for the student.

E. Promptness
To be on time is to be two minutes early!!  Students are expected to be prompt to all scheduled lessons, classes, and rehearsals.  Excessive tardiness will result in probation.

F. Exams and Performances
An unexcused absence from a dress rehearsal or jury exam will constitute automatic probation for the student.  A student who is absent from a concert or public performance for any reason other than illness or death in the immediate family will be automatically dropped from the String Project.

II. STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:

A.  Maintain themselves in an orderly fashion in lessons and in classrooms.

B.  Bring the proper equipment with them for each class.

III. STUDENT PROBATION

All problems, which involve probation, will be taken up immediately with the parent of the child involved.  Such problems include repeated violations of the rules and lack of regular practice/progress.

IV. SCHOOL ORCHESTRA

A.  Enrollment in the String Project is contingent upon membership in a student’s school orchestra.  Membership is defined as enrolled for credit and attending daily classes.  If no school orchestra exists in the school, the rule is not applicable.

B.  The String Project will not grant or accept waivers to this rule.  Waivers issued by the individual directors are not valid.

V. PRIVATE STUDY
