Orchestra Seating Policy

PHILOSOPHY

The orchestra seating policy at the University of Texas at Austin String Project is based on models of professional symphony orchestras that embrace the process of rotating seats for every string section. This strategy reflects the music directors' expertise in balancing sound for orchestral performances. The highest paid positions in any symphony orchestra are, in fact, the principal first (concertmaster) and the principal second violin players because of the essential role of each section within the orchestra. Students interested in the individual ranking process are encouraged to pursue participation in UIL, region, and all-state orchestras.*

SEATING POLICY

Membership. Participation in any String Project orchestra or ensemble is achieved by satisfying promotional requirements as outlined in the promotional jury guidelines and associated posture position checklist.

Concert Program. Students will be listed in the program by section, in alphabetical order.

Section Leaders. Student “section leaders” are students who typically demonstrate consistency in intonation, tone, bowings, and level of preparation during sectional and orchestra rehearsals. These students provide a model for other students in their section and will be chosen based on level of participation in rehearsals and in consultation with technique and repertoire teachers.

Seating Decisions. Seating decisions will be based on musical strategy and not specific rank of ability. Concert seating and stand partner decisions will be made by the string project faculty members and the director. All decisions regarding seating are final.

Rotation. One violin section will be designated Team A and the other Team B. Each team will have the opportunity to play violin I and violin II parts throughout the course of the year, experiencing the different roles of melody and harmony in an ensemble setting. When a Team is designated to play the violin I part, they will be seated in the violin I section of the orchestra. Designated students in the cello, viola, and bass sections will be rotated as section leaders throughout the year. The conductors reserve the right to rotate stand seating within each Team for rehearsal purposes and students will be assigned and remain in concert seating within 3-4 weeks of each performance.

* These orchestras typically rank students through each section based on performances at preliminary and consequent seating auditions. Please note that the reason these rankings function at this level is that region and all-state orchestras screen for the highest level players in the state. The difference in the playing abilities of these students is incremental, such that the strength of each section is insured through the initial screening process.
