Tips from the ProsIn a recent String Project Study conducted, several teachers were questioned on how their students could make a lesson a success even before the lesson started. Here are their 10 best suggestions:

How to make group and/or private lessons a success

01. Punctuality
Needless to say, this is the biggest problem that teachers felt required more attention. It is in your best interest to be on time or even a little early both in private and group lesson. And yes, this includes your 9am Saturday mornings classes. You cannot sneak into a classroom without causing disruption :)

02. Positive Attitude
We are all learning and will make mistakes, both big and small, teachers especially included. Don't view mistakes as bad but rather accept them as an important process of growing musically.

03. Personal Touch
Bring something personal to the lesson, be it questions of technical aspect of your instrument, about creativity, musical expression, or even an opinion. We cannot stress enough that by exploring and questioning that what you play, you will grow in every aspect of your music making.

04. Checklist
Are you sure have prepared everything for your lesson? Did you bring all of your music supplies? Rosin, an extra set of strings, cloth to clean your instrument, chair and rock- stop (for cellists and basses), and most important of all, your bow and sheet music? (And instrument, of course!)

05. Practice Atmosphere
Practice at home in a quiet spot, preferably with a mirror so you can spot check yourself. This is personal time for you and your instrument in which you needn't be disturbed by brothers or sisters.

06. Metronome Mania
The metronome is a musician's tool to help solidify your constant, internal beat. Work with it, don't fight it. This is especially useful when you first start pieces.

07. Practice Duration
Practice according to your level and do so on a daily basis, except maybe Sunday. 30 minutes for beginning students and up to 2 hours for advanced students.

08. Snack Time
Lessons scheduled right after school and later in the afternoon are often "down" times for little kids. May we suggest small and revitalizing treats?

09. A Note from Mr. Suzuki
Love and cherish your ability to play an instrument; and give it your best. Not everyone is so lucky as you are. And welcome to the wonderful family of Strings!

10. Have you followed closely?
Good for you, you've read all the way down to here. Actually, our list only goes up to 9, but we are always looking for new ideas how to better help you, the student. If you have any ideas or comments please fill out a comment form.
